Sports and Chiropractic Care
How high someone can jump, how long someone can run, how much can someone lift? These are very intriguing questions when it comes to sports. The next important question is then, How can chiropractic help with performance?
The job of the chiropractor is to ensure that the nervous system is properly functioning. Without the neurological stimulation the muscles you are trying to engage will be faulty. Inhibited muscles maybe a foreign concept to most because how are my ankle muscles inhibited if I can still walk? When a person rolls the ankle the first time they injure soft tissue and alter the firing patterns for muscles supporting that joint. Someone who previously rolled their ankle, will now commonly say they have a bad ankle because they consistently roll it. This is due to arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). Common symptoms of AMI are…
poor performance
functional instability
mechanical instability
decreased range of motion
persistent pain
higher rate of arthritis
Ankle injuries are not the only thing people are susceptible too. Practice members who undergo surgeries are also prone to AMI and need special attention to those surrounding muscles. The sports world can be a roller coaster, and if we can help steer it from coming off the tracks, then that’s what we want to do. Being an athlete doesn’t require you to be a high flying NFL athlete, they can be weekend warriors, garden heroes, house champions, and couch to 5kers.
