The Vagus Nerve and Your Metabolism: A Plain-English Guide for Women in Their 30s and 40s

If you've never heard the term "vagus nerve," you're not alone. Most women don't until they hit their late 30s and start asking why their body suddenly stopped cooperating.
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body and the main wire between your brain and almost every system below your neck — heart, lungs, gut, hormones, immune signaling. It's how your nervous system tells your body to slow down, digest, recover, and rest.
When the vagus nerve is working well, you sleep deep, you digest food without bloating, your hormones cycle predictably, and your metabolism stays flexible. When it isn't, every one of those things gets harder.
This is a plain-English explainer of how the vagus nerve regulates the systems that matter for your weight and energy — and what you can do about it when it stops working the way it used to.
What the vagus nerve actually does
Your nervous system has two modes. Fight-or-flight (the sympathetic side) revs you up. Rest-and-digest (the parasympathetic side) calms you down. The vagus nerve is the main wire on the parasympathetic side.
When the vagus nerve is firing well, your body knows it's safe. Heart rate slows. Digestion turns on. Cortisol can come down. Sleep deepens. Your metabolism shifts from "hold onto everything" to "release what's not needed."
When the vagus nerve isn't firing well — we call this low vagal tone — your body never gets the signal that it's safe to relax. Cortisol stays high. Digestion stays slow. Sleep stays shallow. Your metabolism stays in survival mode.
For most women in their late 30s and 40s, low vagal tone is the unspoken backdrop for everything they're frustrated about.
How low vagal tone shows up in real life
You might not know your vagal tone is low. You just know:
- You're tired but wired at bedtime.
- You bloat after meals you used to digest fine.
- Your cycle has gotten weirder.
- You can't lose weight even when you cut calories.
- You catch every bug your kids bring home.
- Your resting heart rate creeps up.
- You feel like you can't "come down" from stress like you used to.
Each of these is downstream of the same problem. The vagus nerve isn't sending the safety signal strongly enough.
Why this happens in your late 30s and 40s
Three main reasons.
First, accumulated stress. Years of work, parenting, news cycles, financial pressure, relationship stress — your nervous system doesn't get bonus points for handling more of it. It gets tired. Vagal tone declines.
Second, physical stressors compound. Pregnancies. Surgeries. Falls. Car accidents from years ago. Each of these leaves a physical imprint on your spine and nervous system that adds friction to the vagus nerve's signaling.
Third, the world is faster. You went from no smartphone to checking yours 80 times a day. From slower seasons to year-round work schedules. Your nervous system was built for a different pace.
None of this is your fault. Your body is doing what it was designed to do in a world that doesn't let it down-regulate.
How chiropractic care supports vagal tone
A lot of the vagus nerve runs through the upper neck. Specifically, the top of your cervical spine (around C1 and C2) is right next to where the vagus nerve exits the skull.
When the upper cervical spine is misaligned or stuck, it can create friction in the area where the vagus nerve signals. Adjustments in that area can support vagal tone by reducing the friction.
We're not saying chiropractic resets the vagus nerve directly. We're saying chiropractic supports a more functional nervous system, and a more functional nervous system supports better vagal tone, and better vagal tone supports better metabolism, sleep, digestion, immune function, and stress recovery.

How we measure vagal tone (sort of)
We can't directly measure the vagus nerve in our office. What we CAN measure, with the Tytron thermography scan, is the heat-pattern signature your nervous system leaves along your spine. Asymmetric heat patterns at the upper cervical spine often correlate with the kind of nervous-system dysregulation that drives low vagal tone.
We combine that with a thorough nervous-system exam, motion x-rays where needed, and your own subjective report (how you sleep, how you digest, how you recover). Together, that gives us a clear picture of where the nervous system is stuck and what's downstream of it.
What you can do right now
You don't have to wait for an appointment to start supporting your vagal tone. Some basics that help:
- Slow, full exhales (longer than inhales) for 60 seconds before meals.
- A few minutes of cold water on your face in the morning.
- Humming, singing, gargling — they stimulate the vagus nerve directly.
- Sleep at the same time every night, even on weekends, for at least 4 weeks.
- One actually-restful day per week, not just "not work."
These help. They're not a substitute for addressing the structural friction in your nervous system, but they're a meaningful start.
